LR Licence Course Overview

Our LR training program covers all essential skills required to safely operate a Light Rigid vehicle. With professional trainers and ACT‑approved assessors, you receive high‑quality instruction and a smooth assessment process.

What is an LR Licence?

 A Light Rigid (LR) licence allows you to drive:

  • Buses up to 12 seats

  • Vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM

  • Small trucks and commercial vehicles

  • Automatic or manual LR vehicles (depending on your competency)

 

​Perfect for bus drivers, community transport, delivery operators, and anyone stepping up from a car licence.

Course Duration

Our LR course is structured for maximum learning efficiency and  Government  compliance.

  • One‑day course

  • Training: up to 4 hours

  • Assessment: approx. 1.5 hours

  • Delivered by ACT‑approved heavy vehicle assessors

  • Clear, step‑by‑step training with competency‑based assessment

Course Fee 

  • ​$800 total (training + assessment included)

  • Extra training: $175 per hour (optional)

  • Reassessment: $350 (only if required)

  • For Light Rigid Course student must provide their own vehicle

Entry Requirements - Eligibility

  • Hold your C‑class licence for 12 months

  • Knowledge Test: Complete the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test at the Road Ready Centre (https://www.roadreadycentre.com.au) 

  • Book Training:

  • After passing your test, book online or call us

  • Training & Assessment: Practical LR training + competency assessment → ACT LR Certificate

  • Licence Upgrade: Take your certificate to Access Canberra for immediate upgrade

Assessment 

  • This course includes a practical driving assessment aligned with the State Government’s heavy vehicle licensing requirements.

  • If you are assessed as ‘Not Yet Competent’, you will be required to: book a separate individual assessment at a later date

  • Pay the applicable reassessment fee

Cancellation & Refund Policy

  • Cancellations made less than 7 days before the course start date are not eligible for a refund. A $200 administration fee applies to all cancellations.

  • Failure to attend training on the scheduled day will result in no refund.

  • At our sole discretion, we may offer to rebook you into a later course if you provide a valid medical certificate or if your circumstances are considered reasonable and acceptable.

Required Skills to Pass Your LR Assessment

The required skills to pass your assessment. 

  • Communicate effectively with others when driving a commercial light rigid vehicle,

  • Carry out pre-operational for the vehicle in the course of work activities.

  • Read and interpret instructions, procedures, information and signs relevant to the driving of a commercial light rigid vehicle,

  • Interpret and follow operational instructions and prioritise work,

  • Complete documentation related to the driving of a commercial light rigid vehicle,

  • Operate electronic communication equipment to required protocol,

  • Work collaboratively with others when driving a commercial light rigid vehicle,

  • Adapt appropriately to cultural differences in the workplace, including modes of behaviour and interactions with others,

  • Promptly report and/or rectify any identified problems, faults or malfunctions in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures,

  • Implement contingency plans for unexpected events when driving a commercial light rigid vehicle,

  • Apply precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate hazards that may exist when driving a commercial light rigid vehicle,

  • Monitor work activities in terms of planned schedule,

  • Modify activities depending on differing operational contingencies, risk situations and environments

  • Apply fatigue management knowledge and techniques,

  • Work systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment,

  • Operate and adapt to differences in equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures,

  • Select and use required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and OH&S standards,

  • Monitor and anticipate traffic hazards and take appropriate action, and

  • Carry out pre-operational of the vehicle in the course of work activities.
