Do I need previous experience to start heavy vehicle training?

Accepted Answer

You must hold an Australian car licence for a minimum of 2 years, including your provisional period. No additional heavy‑vehicle experience is required — we’ll train you from the ground up.

How long does each licence course take?

Course duration depends on the licence class and your experience level. Most assessments can be completed within one day, while advanced classes may require additional training time. / *Additional charges may apply*

What documents do I need to bring?

You’ll need:
Your current driver’s licence
Proof of identity (if required)
Any medical or eyesight documents needed for your licence upgrade
We’ll confirm everything when you book.

Do I need to hold my current licence for a minimum period?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You must hold an Australian car licence for a minimum of 2 years. However, if you have recently migrated to the ACT and hold a current, valid overseas licence that you’ve held for more than 2 years, we can apply for an exemption to count your overseas driving experience toward the 2‑year requirement.

Practical driving in real traffic conditions
Manoeuvring, reversing, and load‑handling skills
Assessment preparation
Use of our training vehicles

Can I use my own truck for training or assessment?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can use your own truck as long as it meets the requirements for the licence class. The vehicle must be loaded to at least 60% of its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) and must comply with all safety and roadworthy standards.

What happens if I don’t pass the assessment?

Accepted Answer

If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you can rebook another assessment. A $480 fee applies, which includes a 1‑hour lesson and the full reassessment. We’ll guide you through the areas that need improvement, so you’re fully prepared for your next attempt.

Do you offer weekend or after‑hours training?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We offer flexible training options, including weekends, depending on instructor availability.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?

Accepted Answer

If a booking is not cancelled at least 7 days before the scheduled training date, the full course fee will apply. 
If you need to reschedule within the 7‑day period, a $500 rebooking fee will apply. 
Please note that any cancellation of a course will also attract an $800 administration fee.

What should I wear on training day?

Accepted Answer

You should wear comfortable clothing and closed‑toe shoes suitable for driving. A high‑visibility vest will be supplied, but if you prefer to bring your own, you are welcome to do so.

Can I book a refresher session?

We offer refresher training for drivers who haven’t operated a heavy vehicle in some time.

Can I tow on a rigid vehicle?

Accepted Answer

Yes — you can tow with a rigid vehicle as long as the trailer meets the legal requirements for the licence class. For most rigid licence classes (LR, MR, HR), you are allowed to tow a trailer up to 9 tonnes GVM. Anything above that requires a Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) licence.

Will I be restricted to driving automatics if I sit an automatic truck assessment?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you complete your heavy vehicle assessment in an automatic truck, your licence will be issued with an automatic (A) condition, meaning you are restricted to driving automatic heavy vehicles only. To remove this restriction and drive manual heavy vehicles, you must complete your assessment in a manual truck.

What is the difference between the Medium Rigid and Heavy Rigid licence?

A Medium Rigid (MR) licence allows you to drive a two‑axle rigid vehicle, such as medium‑sized trucks and buses. A Heavy Rigid (HR) licence allows you to drive a three‑axle or more rigid vehicle, including large trucks and buses with a greater Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). HR vehicles are larger, heavier, and offer more commercial driving opportunities.

When can I upgrade from a Rigid licence to a Heavy Combination licence?

You can upgrade from an MR or HR licence to a Heavy Combination (HC) licence once you have held your rigid licence for at least 12 months. This 12‑month period can include time spent on your provisional licence.

What are the medical requirements to gain a heavy vehicle licence?

Accepted Answer

ACT – All applicants, regardless of age, who are applying for a Medium Rigid (MR), Heavy Rigid (HR), Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) driver licence in the ACT must obtain a commercial health assessment at the time of each licence upgrade.

You can complete your heavy vehicle knowledge test at Road Ready Canberra. The test is done in‑person, and you must pass it before booking your heavy vehicle training or assessment. You can book online through the Access Canberra website, or book by calling Road Ready Canberra on (02) 6109 8494.
