MR Licence Course Overview

Our MR course prepares you for safe operation of medium rigid trucks, focusing on control, safety, and ACT licensing requirements.

What is an MR Licence?

An MR licence allows you to drive:

  • Trucks and buses with two axles

  • Vehicles over 8 tonnes GVM

  • Automatic or synchromesh MR vehicles (depending on competency)

Course Duration

  • One‑day MR course

  • Training: up to 4 hours

  • Assessment: ~1.5 hours

  • Delivered by ACT‑approved heavy vehicle assessors

Course Fee

  • $1000 total

  • Extra training: $175/hr ( optional)

  • Reassessment: $350

Entry Requirements- Eligibility

  • Hold your C‑class licence for 12 months

  • Knowledge Test: Complete the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test at the Road Ready Centre (https://www.roadreadycentre.com.au) 

  • Book Training:

  • After passing your test, book online or call us

  • Training & Assessment: Practical LR training + competency assessment → ACT MR Certificate

  • Licence Upgrade: Take your certificate to Access Canberra for immediate upgrade

Assessment 

  • This course includes a practical driving assessment aligned with the State Government’s heavy vehicle licensing requirements.

  • If you are assessed as ‘Not Yet Competent’, you will be required to: book a separate individual assessment at a later date

  • Pay the applicable reassessment fee

  • Safe Wheelz offers LR training 7 days a week, subject to vehicle availability. Sessions can be arranged to suit your schedule.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

  • Cancellations made less than 7 days before the course start date are not eligible for a refund. A $200 administration fee applies to all cancellations.

  • Failure to attend training on the scheduled day will result in no refund.

  • At our sole discretion, we may offer to rebook you into a later course if you provide a valid medical certificate or if your circumstances are considered reasonable and acceptable.

Required Skills to Pass Your MR Assessment

The required skills to pass your assessment. 

  • Communicate effectively with others when driving a commercial medium rigid vehicle,

  • Carry out pre-operational for the vehicle in the course of work activities.

  • Read and interpret instructions, procedures, information and signs relevant to the driving of a commercial medium rigid vehicle,

  • Interpret and follow operational instructions and prioritise work,

  • Complete documentation related to the driving of a commercial medium rigid vehicle,

  • Operate electronic communication equipment to required protocol,

  • Work collaboratively with others when driving a commercial medium rigid vehicle,

  • Adapt appropriately to cultural differences in the workplace, including modes of behaviour and interactions with others,

  • Promptly report and/or rectify any identified problems, faults or malfunctions in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures,

  • Implement contingency plans for unexpected events when driving a commercial medium rigid vehicle,

  • Apply precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate hazards that may exist when driving a commercial medium rigid vehicle,

  • Monitor work activities in terms of planned schedule,

  • Modify activities depending on differing operational contingencies, risk situations and environments

  • Apply fatigue management knowledge and techniques,

  • Work systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment,

  • Operate and adapt to differences in equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures,

  • Select and use required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and OH&S standards,

  • Monitor and anticipate traffic hazards and take appropriate action, and

  • Carry out pre-operational of the vehicle in the course of work activities.
